What is the meaning of baby registry?

A baby registry is a curated list of items that parents-to-be create to share with friends and family. It serves as a wishlist of everything they need to prepare for their new arrival—from big-ticket items like cribs to daily essentials like diapers and wipes.

When can you start a baby registry?

The short answer is: whenever you feel ready! However, most parents find that starting during the second trimester (around 12 to 20 weeks) is the "sweet spot."

Why this timeline works:

  • 12–16 Weeks (The Early Phase): This is a great time to start a private registry.

  • 20 Weeks (The Discovery Phase): Many parents wait until their 20-week anatomy scan.

  • 28–32 Weeks (The Sharing Phase): You should aim to have your registry finalized about 4 to 6 weeks before your baby shower.

Is it rude to put expensive things on a baby registry?

No, it is not considered rude. In fact, including higher-priced items (like strollers, cribs, or car seats) is helpful for a few reasons: Group Gifting, The Completion Discount, Family Contributions.

The Golden Rule of Registry Etiquette. The key to not appearing "greedy" is variety. As long as you provide a wide range of price points—from $10 pacifiers and $25 onesies to $300 car seats—your guests will feel empowered to choose a gift that fits their specific budget.

Are there any baby gifts to avoid?

Yes. While many baby products look cute, some are no longer recommended by safety experts or are notoriously underused by parents. You may want to skip or reconsider:

  • Sleep Positioners & Inclined Sleepers: Products like "wedges" or "inclined rockers" are linked to suffocation risks.

  • Crib Bumpers: Even "breathable" mesh versions are generally discouraged by pediatricians because they can pose a strangulation or entrapment risk.

  • Wipe Warmers: These are often cited by parents as unnecessary.

  • Newborn-Size Shoes: Babies don’t walk, so "hard-sole" shoes are mostly decorative and tend to fall off constantly.

  • Excessive "Newborn" Clothing: Babies outgrow newborn sizes in a matter of weeks (or sometimes days!).

  • Scented Skincare: Many newborns have highly sensitive skin or eczema.

How long should your baby registry stay active?

Keep your registry active for one year after your baby is born.

Why?

  • Completion Discounts: Most retailers let you use your 15% discount for 60 to 180 days after your due date.

  • Easy Returns: An active registry acts as a digital receipt for easier returns and exchanges.

  • First Birthday: Friends often refer back to your list for gift ideas as your baby hits their one-year milestone.

Can I keep my Baby Registry or Wishlist private?

Yes. Wisher registry app provide privacy settings that give you control to share your baby registry for diffrent users. You can also mark individual items as private within a public registry. This is great for keeping personal postpartum supplies or "maybe" items hidden while keeping the rest of your list open for gifts.
